Metal Scanner reads magnetic fields with your phone's magnetometer, so it detects magnetic (ferrous) metal and EMF. Non-magnetic metals like gold, silver, aluminium and copper don't produce a magnetic signal the sensor can pick up, so the app can't reliably detect them. It's built for fun, not professional prospecting.
Your phone has a built-in magnetometer — the same sensor the compass uses. The app reads changes in the magnetic field around the phone and shows them on the meter and EMF gauge. Move the phone slowly near an object to see the reading react.
The camera mode is a fun augmented-reality overlay that draws the detector on top of the live camera view. It does not scan or see through walls, floors or objects — no real X-ray detection is possible on a phone.
Magnetometers can be thrown off by nearby magnets, speakers, metal cases or electronics. Move away from large metal objects and wave the phone in a figure-8 to recalibrate, then try again.
Only the optional camera-detector mode uses the camera, to show the detector over the live view. The image is processed on your device for the overlay and is not uploaded or saved by us. You can deny or revoke it in Settings → Apps → Metal Scanner → Permissions.
The app is free and supported by ads. Any optional paid features are processed through Google Play Billing with the price shown before you buy; manage purchases in the Google Play Store under Payments & subscriptions.
